Please join us for the 2020 Student Success Conference, Plug Into Your Success at WCC, a free virtual event on Friday, August 28, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., designed especially for new students. WCC is dedicated to helping our students be successful and this conference was created to do just that!
This high impact conference has 4 roundtable topics with multiple sessions, allowing students to customize their experience. Take a look at the conference agenda and be prepared to select the sessions most appealing to you.

9:00-9:40 a.m.
ROUND 1 - Setting the Foundations For Success
Session 1 - Learning Resources for Success
Learning Resources for Success session covers information on WCC's Tutoring & Writing Centers, Bailey Library, and Learning Support Services. You will learn how these resources can assist you in your academic studies and learning process.
Session 2 - Stepping Stones to Success
Stepping Stones to Success session covers information on Advising, Counseling, Success Coaches, Career Transitions Office, and the Co-Curricular Transcript. You will learn how these resources can assist you in your academic, career, and personal development throughout college.
Session 3 - Your Financial Platform
Your Financial Platform session covers information about how to afford your tuition, books, and supplies through financial aid plus grants/scholarship opportunities through the WCC Foundation and Student Resource Center.

ROUND 2 - Academic Connections: First Lecture
Session 1 - Climate Change: Science, Scenarios, and Solutions

This lecture goes over the basics of climate science, the impact of climate change, and some solutions that are surprisingly simple.
Session 2 - Starting your own business? What makes you special?
Instructor: Shawn Ferguson
Figuring out what makes your business, your passion, your idea, special. Many people start business with zero planning, thought or analysis. Here are some things to consider.
Session 3 - Hostage Video or Online Presentation? You be the Judge!
Instructor: Claire Sparklin
Do you dread turning your camera ON for online meetings? Discover the top 10 tips to go from looking like the subject of a hostage video to the star of a talk show.
Session 4 - Newborn Care
Instructor: Theresa Dubiel MSN, RN
We will explore a nurse's role in caring for a new baby in the first five minutes of life. A newborn exam is much more than saying "ten fingers and ten toes". You need knowledge related to anatomy, an eye for detail, the confidence to speak up and skills needed to make the right moves. You might just save a life!
Session 5 - Brake System Fundamentals: How small brakes can stop a big car
Instructor: Allen Day
This lecture is a refresher for students, but also builds on the operational details of transportation hydraulic braking systems.

You will learn how these strategies can assist you in building skills for success in online classes.
Session 2 - Deconstructing the First Lecture
In the Deconstructing the First Lecture session you will discover how to "unpack" the First Lecture session you just attended where an instructor demonstrated one of their lectures. You will learn how the following skills and strategies can help you deconstruct and understand other lectures in your college classes:

Session 3 - How to Go to College Without Going Broke
How to Go to College Without Going Broke session covers information about money management skills, banking information, and entrepreneurship resources. You will learn how these skills and strategies can assist you in successfully managing your finances.

ROUND 4 - Student-Led Conversations
Session 1 - Academic Activities & Enhancing The Co-Curricular Transcript
Academic Activities & Enhancing the Co-Curricular Transcript session covers information about various academic-related activities at WCC such as the honor society Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the student-run newspaper The Washtenaw Voice, and course-related groups like the Poetry Club. You will learn about these opportunities and the co-curricular transcript, how to get involved, and how this will enhance your WCC experience.
Session 2 - Balancing College Life With Some Fun
Balancing College Life With Some Fun session covers information about the wide range of exciting student activities, events, trips, and clubs available for you to participate in as a WCC student. You will learn about these fun opportunities and how to stay informed and connected so you don't miss out!
Session 3 - Becoming a Force For Good
Becoming a Force For Good session covers information about the wide range of community outreach, activism, and volunteer opportunities available for you to participate in as a WCC student, including how to become a Student Ambassador (a paid position!). We'll also talk about how to embrace diversity, equity, and inclusion. You will learn about these rewarding opportunities and how to stay informed so you can stay connected.
