WCC: The Smart Choice For Your Student

WCC  is evaluating how to best offer face-to-face classes to ensure the health and safety of its students and staff. 

Meanwhile, on-demand and virtual classes are always available and are a way to stay safe and get an education. If your student enjoys rich interaction on a set schedule  with instructors students, the virtual classroom is a great option. Students may also enjoy the flexibility and autonomy of on-demand courses.

After applying to WCC, your student  must  add WCC to their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Add WCC with these steps:

• Visit www.fafsa.gov and log in with their FSA username and password. 
• Select “Make a Correction” and in the second portion, add WCC as a school. Our federal school code is 002328 or you can search us by name. 
• The student should check their WCC email in 3-5 business days for next steps.

WCC has scholarships available for a semester or a full year, depending on the scholarship offered and eligibility requirements. Learn more about WCC scholarships and application deadlines at wccnet.edu/scholarships.

Students who are enrolled in another college or university and want to take courses at WCC are known as guest students. Credits earned at WCC are transferred to the student’s “home” college or university once they are earned.

The guest student option is a great way for students who take time off from their home institution or are home for the summer and want to continue their education.

Students who have graduated from high school and want to start the first year of their education at WCC can take a visiting year at the College. Credits earned may then be transferred to another institution.

Guest students are able to take advantage of all of the various student services and academic resources available to non-Guest students. Unfortunately, guest students are not eligible to receive federal financial aid funds (grants, loans, or work study)

There are many co-curricular programs available, such as our STEM Scholars Program, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, and many clubs and organizations.

View the academic calendar for important dates. You should note that each WCC semester has courses with different start and end dates. Your student should check their course schedule for specific class dates. 

Learn the Major Differences Between High School and College and encourage your student to talk with WCC students to gain their perspectives on the transition to college.

Our Counseling & Career Planning center offers career assessments that can be completed online. Students can also schedule an appointment to speak with their advisor about next steps for a career assessment. 

Students may explore various industries and career pathways; find jobs, internships, and co-ops; develop valuable connections with employers; create resumes and cover letters; and develop interview skills. 

A program of study, or major, is the degree or certificate that a student is pursuing at WCC.

Students indicate their Program of Study when they apply to WCC. They can change their program of study in their student portal, myWCC.

Under the Student Service tab, select "Student Records", then "Request a Program Change". The change request will be reviewed and students will be notified of a decision through their WCC email. 

Students who are unsure of what program of study to choose can meet with an Academic Advisor to explore careers and degree paths. 

 

Students who are receiving federal financial aid need to be in an eligible program of study, and taking courses that are required in their program of study. Any classes that are not in a student’s program of study may not be eligible for federal financial aid. Read more information about Financial Aid and Program of Study

Students may select only one program of study, although some programs have concentrations in different areas.

Once a student has applied to WCC, they will need to complete their Applicant Checklist. To access their Applicant Checklist, your student should log in to their WCC Gateway. Have your student click on My WCC and then the Applicant tab to access their Applicant Checklist (listed as My Checklist).

WCC is committed to making sure that student rights under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) of 1974 are protected. At the college level, FERPA rights transfer from parents, to the student, regardless of the student's age. Students can authorize WCC to discuss their information with a parent, spouse, partner, relative, guardian, etc. by submitting a Release of Information form to the Student Connection.

 

Before enrolling in courses, we need to establish a student’s skill level so they are most prepared for academic success. If you see the “Placement/Assessment” item on your student’s Applicant Checklist, it means that they still need to demonstrate their skill level. 

To satisfy the Placement Levels, students may either submit SAT/ACT test scores, college transcripts, or complete our placement exams. Learn more about our Entry Assessments.

 

Tuition Rates & Fees are based on a student’s residency status. Your student can get an estimated cost of attendance with the Net Price Calculator. Financial aid, including scholarships, can help reduce the cost of college.

WCC understands that many students and their families may face financial hardships. Learn more about payment options and deadlines.

To avoid being dropped from class(es), students must pay their full tuition, have a payment plan in place, or have financial aid authorized (added) to their account.

WCC is a very safe college community. However, it’s wise to use the same care and caution as you would in any public place. Learn more about safety on campus.

Your student can have fun and make new friends by participating in numerous student activities. Your student can take part in club or intramural sports, work out at the Health & Fitness Center, join a student club or organization, write for the student newspaper, attend area concerts and other performances at discounted prices, and take trips to places like Cedar Point, Chicago, Sleeping Bear Dunes, and Mackinac Island. Currently-enrolled students can log into Campus Connect to explore and connect to WCC’s Student Life.

Whether on-campus or off-campus one of the best strategies for personal safety is to be constantly aware of one’s surroundings. In addition, keep an eye on personal belongings. Staff, students and guests may request a public safety escort from any location on campus to any other location on campus by contacting the Public Safety department at 734-973-3411.

WCC Safe is the official safety app of Washtenaw Community College. It connects with WCC’s very own Police Department to send you important safety updates, offers real-time virtual escorts to make sure you get to your destination safely, and acts as a mobile panic button. The WCC Safe app is available for free on Apple’s App Store and Google Play.

 

WCC is easily accessible by car, bus, or bike, depending on where your student lives. Learn about transportation options and parking at WCC.

• If your student has financial aid available, federal work study funds may be an option. Work study has numerous on-campus jobs. To find out more information or see if your student qualifies, contact the Financial Aid Office at 734-973-3523 or [email protected]. 
• In addition to work study positions, the college occasionally offers part-time support staff positions that do not tie into Financial Aid. Students may search part-time support staff positions at https://jobs.wccnet.edu. 

Learning Support Services are available for students who have a disability and may need accommodations (see Accommodation Request Form). Students needing accommodations for their Connect Session and/or college placement test (entry assessment) please contact 734-973-3342 to speak with a Program Specialist. Learning Support Services is located in LA 104.

The Learning Commons provides free tutoring and writing help to all WCC students. Current schedules for drop-in tutoring, study groups, and other learning resources are available on the Learning Commons website.

Personal Counselors specialize in mental health and wellness, degree requirements, career paths, and university transfer pathways. 

Your student can contact the Counseling & Career Planning at 734-677-5102 to schedule their appointment or they can make their own appointment from the WCC Gateway. 

Students are assigned a dedicated First-Year Success Coach based on their academic program. Success coaches work with students from the time they enroll at WCC through the end of their first year. Success coaches help students navigate obstacles, connect students to campus services and resources, work with students to develop goals and provide academic pro-tips to enhance their success.

We encourage you and your student to check out our Transfer Credits from WCC page. This page contains information about the Michigan Transfer Agreement, as well as Articulation Agreements with specific institutions. For more clarity about various transfer options, your student should visit Counseling and Career Planning, located in the Student Center Building on the second floor, to meet with an advisor.

 

The Michigan Transfer Agreement makes it easier to transfer your general education courses earned at WCC to participating 4-year institutions. Students complete 30 credits of general education requirements at WCC and those credits are accepted to participating 4-year institutions to directly fulfill their general education requirements. 

Transferring is more than just credits. Completing an Associate Degree first is a smart move for a lot of reasons. Not only can students save money, receive an excellent educational experience, but students are also receiving a credential which can help them gain entry to various careers and industries while they are pursuing their 4-year degree. 

This conversation is based on the individual’s goals, transfer institution and deadlines but beginning to talk about this process when applying to the 4-year is a good plan.
